Compliance Checks

Compliance Checks

A compliance check is a formal investigation into your tax affairs.

Have HMRC sent you a compliance check into your Self-Assessment Tax Return?

A compliance check is a formal investigation into your tax affairs. The majority of compliance checks are initiated because HMRC believes that there is an error within your tax return. The time limit to open a compliance check is 12 months from the date the tax return was filed with HMRC.

There are two types of compliance checks – an ‘aspect inquiry’ looking into a specific aspect of your tax return or a ‘full check’ which will involve HMRC reviewing records related to the full tax year.

If you have received a compliance check letter from HMRC and would like to know more about the tax enquiry process or tax investigations, please contact us today for a no obligation consultation.
